An extended school is one that provides activities, support, training and other opportunities outside of the normal school day. These services can be for the students of the school, the students of the other schools in the project, parents, families and the wider community.
The types of activities that fit in with the extended schools agenda include: activities for young people, wrap around childcare, for primary aged children, parental support and family learning, access to specialist services and information, and access to school facilities by the wider community including adult learning opportunities.
The schools included in the RESPECT project (click here to see which schools are included) are working in partnership with each other, the RESPECT Project and other partners to deliver these activities and to asses their communities needs.
There is no set way to do this; schools can deliver selected activities according to the needs of its community and in a format that is best suited to its community and as the school thinks is suitable. The schools do not have to deliver everything themselves: schools must work together with their partners, including neighbouring schools, to deliver activities for parents, families, children, young people and the wider community; where appropriate schools can signpost to existing activities.
